A Brief History
Founded April 20, 1994, the GLBTSU (formerly B-GLAD) is a student, faculty and staff organization at East Carolina University that is dedicated to the promotion of diversity awareness and GLBT education on campus as well as in the community.
Shortly after amending the organization's constitution with a non-discriminatory policy that added gender identity and gender expression, the Bisexuals, Gays, Lesbians, and Allies for Diversity (B-GLAD) student organization adopted a new name in order to be more inclusive of the transgendered community, resulting in the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgendered Student Union (GLBTSU).
Who We Are Today
As an ever-growing and prominent student organization on our campus, we recognize the needs of many of our members and student body as they relate to GLBT student issues. We continually strive to provide an accessible network of resources to all students, and provide personal and professional support to those who seek it.
We work hard to ensure that the climate on campus is suitable for persons from all walks of life, particularly our GLBT students and Allies, by engaging faculty, staff, and administration to make real impacting differences in our university system that aid these goals.
Current Executive Committee (2013-2014):
Hillary is a junior Music Education and Vocal Performance major. She is from Louisburg, NC and enjoys singing and volunteering around campus. She also likes crafts and socializing with friends and can often be found lounging in the LGBT Resource Office. "I joined this organization because I want to make a difference in the LGBT community."
Gerald Vega - Secretary
Gerald is currently a Junior at East Carolina University. He was accepted into the clinical laboratory science program for the allied health sciences. He aspires to be clinical laboratory scientist for the world health organization, traveling and diagnosing different diseases around the world. He joined this organization to continue the effort in having a community that supports each other.
Meredith Clark - Vice President
Meredith is a junior transfer student dual-degreeing in Special Education and Psychology. She is an avid reader, practiced singer, and enjoys playing the piano and violin. She is passionate about helping children with special needs, advocating for the unborn in pro-life events and spreading awareness about sexual violence. After graduating with both of her degrees, she hopes to start graduate school and eventually work in a private practice helping special needs children and victims of violence. As a member of the GLBT community, she has joined the organization in hopes of making a difference.
Jackie DeJesus – President
Jackie is a junior at East Carolina University. She is majoring in Political Science and minoring in International Studies with a concentration in European Studies. Jackie is the 2013-2014 SAACURH Dining Chair, a pledge to Sigma Omicron Epsilon Sorority, Inc., and a Resident Advisor.
Faculty Advisor - Aaron Lucier
Aaron Lucier is the Director of Housing Operations at ECU. He has been the staff adviser to the GLBTSU (formerly B-GLAD) since 1996. He enjoys volunteering and being active in the community. Currently, he is on the boards of Pitt County AIDS Service Organization and Equality North Carolina. Aaron has his Bachelors Degree from the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, and his Masters Degree from Florida State University.
He lives in Greenville with his partner of 16 years, with their two dogs. They also foster Basset Hounds, for the Carolina Basset Hound Rescue Group.
